My Experience as a Registered Nurse

As many of you know, besides running this website, I am also a night shift Registered Nurse. I love telling people that I am a recipe creator/homemaker by day and a nurse by night.

I actually graduated from Nursing school in 2006, the same year that I got married and moved to Florida too. Since this week has been Nurses Week, I decided to film a video sharing a bit of my experience as a Registered Nurse.

If you want to learn more about this part of my life, you can hear all about how I decided to become a nurse, nursing school, the different areas where I’ve worked, the aspects of Nursing that I really like, what it’s like being a working mom and where I’m working now.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer, so leave your comments and questions below.

Also, if you are a nurse, I would love to hear about your experience – what made you decide to be a nurse, what area do you work in, what is your favorite specialty, etc.  If you have any nurses in the family or had any great experiences with nurses, I would love it if you would share in the comments below too.

Happy Nurse’s week to you! I started off as an ICU nurse but now working as a research nurse coordinating clinical trials. We assist with all the patient research to get drugs and devices approved by the FDA. It has been challenging at times but also rewarding! I will never regret the decision to go to nursing school. The options are endless like you stated in your video!

      Thank you, Viktoria.
What an interesting job you have! I think it’s amazing how many different options a nursing degree can offer.

Happy Nurse’s Week to you. I love your blog site. My favorite recipe is for your cannoli cake.
I am a retired nurse. I worked in adult care until I had a chance to train for NICU, so I spent the last twenty years of my career in that field. I also love to cook, especially to bake; therefore, I watch your blog site frequently. Like you, I also had a debilitating illness. that made me unable to work for about three years. I would love to know more about your illness and recovery, but I know that is far too nosy of me. I also, by the way, went to school to get my nursing degree as an adult, like you Mom. I love your story.. Thank you for sharing.

      Hi Dolly,
So lovely to meet you – thank you for taking the time to write and share a little about yourself. I really appreciate that you are a loyal reader:).
I have shared a lot about my health over the years. You can watch a video my husband and I recorded sharing our story and how my health issues began and I have shared many things in other blog posts too.

I loved this! I’m an LPN so I found it fascinating. Your mom is amazing, nursing school takes study time for sure!
I’m a day nurse, I can’t work nights. Right now I teach home care aides and write and develop the curriculum for continuing ed. So yes, lot’s of options.

    Hello, Olga

Great video :D. Thank you for sharing your nursing journey. I am interested in the job you currently do as a RN. I know you gave a description of it, but is there a name/unit for the type of nursing you do? I am interested in it and would like to see if that’s something that’s available in my city.

The department where I work is called the Transfer Center. It may be called differently in different hospital systems and not all hospitals even have a transfer center, so you’ll need to find that out.

Happy nurses week and happy national hospital week! PACU nurse here, night shifter 🙂 I do four nights per week, not so easy with five little kids, but we make it work. Like you said, night shift is not for everyone. I love nursing, I love my job! Thank you for sharing this video!

You’re an amazing woman and your stories are inspiring! I love your blog! I’m an RN as well and I work NICU, PICU and acute care in the children’s hospital. I worked nights for 15 years and now switched to day shift due to family circumstances. It’s not an easy job but very rewarding. Sometimes we leave work with nothing left in us, but we DO make a difference and that’s what inspires us to do what we do. Blessings to you in your medical career and as a blogger!

Loved hearing about your RN experience. You do amazing things. I work on an older adult intermediate/GMB floor as an RN. I prefer night shift as well. I’ve tried many of your recipes. My mom said, “its a tradition for all Russian women to be good at cooking, except me (referring to herself), I’d rather buy something pre-made”. So she did not teach me to cook Russian food. I learned it from your blog! Thank you!

So great to “meet” another night shift nurse:). Thank you for taking the time to write, Polina.
I’m so glad you have enjoyed my recipes – it makes me so happy to hear that.

I recently found your website since right now I am a homeschooling mom and we are studying Russia. I’m also a part-time NIGHT RN. When I read the short description of you, I thought “gosh, that sounds like me.” I work in medical oncology. No interest in days, but who knows where life will go. I also love my IP so today we are trying your recipe for IP potatoes and sausage dinner before I head to work.
