Banana Ice Cream With only 1 ingredient - frozen bananas
dairy free, sugar free banana ice cream

This banana ice cream is a dream come true for anyone who wants a healthy treat. As a mom, I am so happy to give this to my children. It’s a completely healthy, sugar free, dairy free treat that I can make in minutes.

The frozen bananas pureed in the food processor are transformed into an incredibly creamy, luscious texture that resembles soft serve ice cream. It takes just a few minutes to slice up some bananas, right? If you have them frozen, it’s very convenient to have them to have on hand for this recipe. My boys absolutely love it and so do I. I also share some other flavor options, which are awesome. If you want some other delicious options, I have them for you too.

This is a favorite dessert at our house, especially since we live in Florida, the sunshine state, where we get more than our fair share of hot weather:). You are going to love it!

What kind of bananas should you use?

The best bananas for this ice cream are the ones that are perfectly ripe, but not too ripe:). You need to use “goldilocks” bananas, my friend😀. If you use bananas that aren’t ripe enough, they won’t be as sweet and won’t have the best texture. The bananas that are slightly too ripe will be sweeter, but they will be more brown. They may discolor the “ice cream” a bit.

The good thing is that when your bananas are the perfect ripeness all you have to do is slice them up and freeze them. That way, they are ready to be used anytime. You don’t have to make the ice cream right away.

How To Make Banana Ice Cream (Dairy-free, sugar free)

  1. Slice the bananas into pieces and freeze. Place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and freeze until solid, about 2 hours. (If you’re not making the ice cream right away, transfer the frozen banana slices to an airtight container or freezer ziplock bag. Store in the freezer until ready to use.)
  2. Pulse the frozen banana slices in the food processor for about a minute. Then leave it turned on, mixing until it forms a smooth and creamy consistency.
  3. If it stalls at any time, stop the food processor. Use a spatula to mix it up and turn it on again.
  4. Serve right away, or freeze for 15-30 minutes, maximum, to harden the ice cream just a bit.

More Flavor Ideas

I just love how many other flavor combinations we have come up with! This method for making ice cream serves as great foundation for so many other delicious flavors.

Give it a chocolate flavor by adding some cocoa powder, or add some nutella or peanut butter.

Frozen fruit is another great option. Make sure that at least 1/2, preferably 2/3 of your mixture is made up of frozen bananas. They are the key ingredient to the creamy texture.

Here are the ones that I love the most: strawberries, mango and/or pineapples. You can always add a bit of liquid to the food processor. Start with a tablespoon or two. You can use milk, orange juice, coconut milk, almond milk, etc. Be careful not to overdo it, since you can’t take it out later.

Can You Use a Blender?

Unfortunately, no. A blender is best used for things that are more liquid. It’s great for smoothies, but not for this particular recipe. Your blender will stall and you’ll need to add some sort of liquid. In order for the blades to be able to turn and mix up your ingredients, they need the liquid. You’ll end up with a smoothie, not something thick and creamy, like ice cream.

New to the food processor?

I have a really helpful video and blog post all about the food processor. You will get lots of great ideas of all the myriads of things you can use your food processor for. It’s one of my favorite kitchen appliances.

  • 46 bananas, sliced and frozen

Instructions

  1. Slice bananas into pieces.  Place on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze in one layer until solid. (If not making ice cream right away, transfer the frozen banana slices into an airtight container in the freezer, otherwise the bananas will dry out.)
  2. Place the frozen banana slices into a food processor. Pulse for about a minute to break up the banana slices, then keep it turned on until you get a creamy ice cream consistency.
  3. If the food processor starts to stall, turn it off, mix it up and pulse it again. You can also add a few spoonfuls of liquid, such as orange juice, coconut milk, almond milk or regular milk or cream.  (My favorite is coconut milk.) Don’t add too much liquid or it will turn into a smoothie.
  4. It is best served immediately, or return to the freezer for a short amount of time, just to harden just a little bit. Since there is no sugar or cream, it will become as hard as a rock if you freeze it completely.
  5. Different flavor variation ideas: chocolate: cocoa powder, nutella, peanut butter. You can also add other frozen fruit – mangos, pineapple, strawberries. For best results, make sure that at least 1/2 of the ingredients are still bananas – they are what creates the creamy texture in this “ice cream”.
