Apple-Pear Kompot (Fruit Drink) Яблочно-Грушевый Компот

Drinking cool, refreshing beverages is so satisfying.  Especially if you can choose the flavor combinations and sweetness level. In my opinion, juices from the store are cloyingly sweet. I can’t understand how it’s possible to drink it without diluting it with at least half as much water.

Making your own drinks is so easy. Fruit kompot is a traditional Russian drink, which is made by cooking fruit and then drinking the liquid. It can be made from just about any combination of fruits or berries, fresh, frozen or dried.

Here is a picture my brother, Valik, sent me on my phone recently. Aren’t they gorgeous?

 My parents have their own apple trees and lots and LOTS of different berries. They also have wild grapes. They are small and pretty sour, but make an AMAZING kompot. My mom freezes the berries and grapes, dries the apples and then makes kompot all winter long. Or as long as the abundance lasts:).

Apple and pear kompot is my personal favorite. I love the flavor combination. Hope you enjoy it too. Plus, you can make Apple-Pear Sauce with the cooked fruit.

Quarter the apples and pears.

Place the fruit in an 8 quart pot and fill it to the top with water. Bring to a boil. Add sugar. The amount of sugar depends on how sweet you like your drinks. Cook for about 3o minutes. Strain the kompot through a fine mesh sieve lined with a paper towel or cheesecloth.  Use the cooked fruit to make apple-pear sauce, if you’d like. Cool and store in the refrigerator.

  3. Store in the refrigerator.

    What a great idea to use the cooked fruit. And my family loves to eat fruit sauces (I’ve been buying them from a store or online ). And I’ve been throwing out the cooked fruit after I make “kompot” for my little one, and I make kompot every other day for him. Now I feel guilty about how much cooked fruit I have wasted.

    I prepared this for a dinner party last night, and it was a wonderful drink. It reminded me of staying with relatives in Russia. Thank you for the simple recipe. I also made that Apple Pear fruit sauce. My children and wife loved it.
