Hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot are incredible first and foremost because the eggs peel like a dream. Cooking the eggs in the pressure cooker makes the egg shell just slide right off. Plus, with this method, the eggs are perfectly tender with golden yolks and not gray/green ring around the yolk.

Instant Pot hard boiled eggs. Eggs made in a pressure cooker peel so much better than when cooked on the stove. They also are perfectly cooked, tender with golden yolks.

Instant Pot hard boiled eggs are a game changer. I use my electric pressure cooker all the time, it's actually one of my favorite small kitchen appliances. One of the things that I use it for consistently are to make hard boiled eggs, because it makes it even easier.

Hard boiled eggs are already super easy to make on the stove, but when I am multi tasking in the kitchen, it's nice to load the eggs in the Instant Pot, set it up and it will do all the work for me and beep when the eggs are done. Plus, cooking them in the pressure cooker gives you perfect results and the eggs peel so easily too.

Hard boiled eggs are great to meal prep and have on hand for a quick breakfast or lunch. I love adding them to garden salads, chicken salad or tuna salads and wraps.

Video of How to Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

  1. Place the eggs in the Instant Pot on top of a rack, trivet or steaming basket. I really like using a steaming basket because it makes it so easy to take out the eggs later.
  2. Pour in 1 cup of water.
  3. Cook on high pressure for 5 minutes. Rest for 5 minutes, then release the pressure and immediately put the eggs in ice water to cool.

Best Way to Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

I find the best way to peel eggs is to do it right away and to peel them right in the ice water where they are chilling. It should be really easy to do since the pressure cooker will cause the egg shell to be much easier to peel. Crack the egg shell gently all around on the countertop.

Dip the egg back into the warm and start peeling. The water will come between the shell and the egg, helping the shell to come off smoothly.

Store hard boiled eggs in the refrigerator, in an airtight container, for about 5 days.

Helpful Tips and FAQs

Why do Instant Pot eggs peel easily?

The Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. The high pressure helps to create a separation between the egg shell and the air pocket inside. Once they are cooked they peel more easily than most other methods.

Can you use cold eggs when cooking them in the Instant Pot?

Yes. I take them right out of the refrigerator and right into the Instant Pot and turn it on.

How many eggs can you cook in the Instant Pot?

As many as you want. In fact, you can make just one, although I don't know why you would bother - you can always refrigerate them for later, or up to a few dozen. You can fill the Instant Pot right up, placing the eggs on top of each other in several layers, and the cooking time will still be 5 minutes.
The Instant Pot will take a little bit longer to come to pressure, but once it does, the eggs still need the same amount of time to cook.

Why do eggs have a gray/green lining around the yolk?

That usually means that the eggs are overcooked. It's totally harmless and you can still eat the eggs, they just won't be as pretty.
To prevent this, make sure you take the eggs out of the Instant Pot after they cook for 5 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes. If you leave them in there, the eggs will continue to cook, and will overcook.
When you take them out, place them in ice water immediately to stop the cooking process. If you take them out of the Instant Pot but leave them in the hot pot, they will still continue to cook.

New to the Instant Pot?

If you are the owner of the Instant Pot but haven't become proficient in it yet, or maybe are intimidated by it and haven't even taken it out of the box, this is a great recipe to start with. I don't make mashed potatoes in the Instant Pot, Jessica.
I don't think the Instant Pot is perfect for everything, and I prefer mashed potatoes prepared on the stovetop. There are recipes better suited for cooking in a pressure cooker and others are best made with other methods.

I've never used an instant pot. You say you can cook meat. Is it really tender as if done in a crock pot?
